Irwin Competition 30
Description
The Irwin 30 Competition (built 1972–1974, fewer than 50 hulls) was Ted Irwin's early foray into dedicated racing, adapting the popular Irwin 30 cruiser platform into an IOR half-ton racer with a performance-focused underbody and oversized rig while retaining surprising livability for weekend overnights. Featuring a sleek fin keel with skeg-hung rudder (5′3″ draft, shoal-draft version optional), moderate displacement of ~10,000 lbs, and heavy 4,600 lb ballast (46% ratio for solid stiffness), it boasts a tall masthead sloop rig with 474 sq ft of sail area (SA/D ~16–20 depending on headsail) that delivers quick acceleration, excellent upwind pointing, and competitive PHRF times for its era—often outperforming contemporaries in club races. The low-aspect hull (LOA 30′, LWL 26′10″, beam 10′2″) prioritizes speed over volume, but below decks it still offers a compact yet functional layout: V-berth forward, saloon with settees, galley, and quarter berth aft, plus 6′ headroom in the main cabin.
