Irwin 40 Mk Ii
Description
The Irwin 40 Mk II is a fiberglass masthead sloop (with optional ketch rig) designed by naval architect Ted Irwin and built by Irwin Yachts from 1980 to 1985. Part of the Citation series, it was developed as a performance-oriented coastal and moderate offshore cruiser, blending racing influences from Ted Irwin's SORC-winning Razzle Dazzle designs with family-friendly livability. Compared to the earlier Mk I (1977-1979), the Mk II features refinements like a deeper forefoot for improved upwind performance, updated rigging (often a high-aspect cutter setup), and enhanced interior layouts for better light and ventilation, making it stiffer and more seaworthy. With options for shoal draft fixed keel or keel/centerboard, it's versatile for shallow-water access while maintaining stability for passages like the Bahamas or East Coast runs. Approximately 100-150 hulls were produced, positioning it as a solid bluewater-capable cruiser under 40 feet.
