Irwin 37 Mk-V Ketch

Description

The Irwin 37 Mark V Ketch (built 1980–1984) represents the final and most refined evolution of the original Irwin 37 line. Retaining the signature center-cockpit layout and enormous interior volume that made the model famous, the Mk V received a taller, modernized ketch rig with a higher-aspect mainsail, a longer boom, and a taller mizzen for improved light-air performance and better balance compared to the earlier low-aspect rigs. The hull was slightly updated with a sharper entry, a small sugar-scoop reverse transom (adding about 8–10 inches to the overall length on deck), and an improved rudder and skeg design that reduced weather helm and enhanced steering response. Displacement crept up to around 21,000–22,000 lbs with ballast increased to ~9,000 lbs, giving the Mk V noticeably stiffer and more seaworthy characteristics than the earlier marks. Below, it kept the beloved private aft stateroom with en-suite head, huge U-shaped galley, and walk-through to the saloon, but benefited from better joinery, improved ventilation, and more contemporary styling. Widely regarded as the best-sailing and most offshore-capable of all Irwin 37 variants, the Mark V Ketch combined the line’s legendary livability with genuinely respectable performance, making it a favorite among long-term cruisers on a budget who wanted ketch-rig flexibility without sacrificing too much speed or pointing ability.
