Irwin 3/4 Ton

Description

The Irwin ¾ Ton (also known as the Irwin 30 Competition or Irwin 30 Racer, built 1978–1980, ~40 hulls) was Ted Irwin’s dedicated IOR ¾-Ton Level Rating racer – a stripped-out, high-performance version of the standard Irwin 30 hull pushed to the absolute limits of the rule. Key specs: LOA 30′0″, LWL 26′10″, beam 10′2″, displacement ~9,200–9,600 lbs (lighter than the cruiser version), deep fin keel with 5′6″ draft, 4,600 lb lead ballast (≈48–50% ratio), tall fractional sloop rig with large roachy mainsail and overlapping genoas (SA/D ≈19.5–21), giving it genuine planing ability downwind and excellent upwind speed for its era. Many rated around 24.0–24.5 under IOR and dominated regional PHRF fleets in the late 1970s. Below decks it’s spartan: open saloon with pipe berths, tiny galley, small, enclosed head, and a huge cockpit for crew work. Construction is solid fiberglass hull with balsa-cored deck and the typical Irwin molded liner, but with upgraded chainplates and rigging for racing loads.
