Irwin 28 - 2
Description
The Irwin 28 Mk II is a fiberglass masthead sloop designed by naval architect Ted Irwin and built by Irwin Yachts in St. Petersburg, Florida, from approximately 1973 to 1975. As the second iteration of the Irwin 28 series (Mk I-IV, launched in 1970), the Mk II introduced minor improvements over the Mk I, including enhanced interior layout, slightly better deck hardware, and improved ventilation for greater comfort. Designed for affordable coastal and day sailing, it targets novice sailors and small families, offering a surprisingly spacious interior for its 28-foot size, ideal for weekend trips or short coastal hops (e.g., Chesapeake Bay, Florida Keys). Available with a fixed fin keel or optional keel/centerboard, it’s versatile for shallow waters but not suited for bluewater sailing without significant upgrades due to its light construction. Approximately 50-75 Mk II hulls were produced, part of the ~200-300 total Irwin 28 units, making it relatively rare.
