Irwin 12 Ton Sloop
Description
The Irwin 12 Ton sloop, built by Irwin Yachts in the early 1970s as a performance-oriented racer under the International Offshore Rule (IOR) for the 12-ton class. Designed by Ted Irwin, it featured a sleek fin-keel hull (LOA 32'0", LWL 24'5", beam 10'6", displacement ~12,000 lbs, ballast 5,500 lbs) with a deep draft of 5'6" (shoal version optional at 4'0"), a tall masthead sloop rig delivering ~450 sq ft of sail area (SA/D ~17.6 for solid upwind speed), and a spade rudder for responsive handling. It was a reasonably stiff, moderate performer suited for club racing and day-sailing, with a simple V-berth forward, saloon settees, galley, and quarter berth below—functional but spartan compared to Irwin's roomier cruisers. Only a handful were produced before evolving into the Mk II with refinements like a transom-hung rudder and daggerboard; today, they're rare classics on the used market, often praised for affordability and fun in moderate wind
