Irwin 1/2 Ton
Description
The Irwin 1/2 Ton (1976–1979) is a 30 ft IOR Half-Ton racer-cruiser designed by Ted Irwin as a direct response to the hugely popular 1970s Half Ton Cup rule, built in relatively large numbers (approximately 200 hulls) by Irwin Yachts in Florida. With an LOA of 30 ft 0 in, beam 9 ft 10 in, fin keel drawing 5 ft 4 in (shoal 4 ft 6 in option), and a light displacement of just 7,200 lb. (3,300 lb. ballast), she carries a towering masthead rig with 490–510 sq ft upwind and was one of the first American production boats to fully exploit the IOR’s tendency to reward pinched ends, bumped-out midsections, and high sail-area/displacement ratios. Below, she offers a surprisingly roomy interior for the era—six berths, enclosed head, decent galley, and 6 ft headroom—making her a genuine dual-purpose boat that could win Wednesday night races and still take the family cruising on weekends. Famous for blistering speed in 12–20 knots (especially on a reach, where she planes easily), a lively but forgiving helm, and a PHRF rating typically in the 120–140 range even today, the Irwin 1/2 Ton remains a cult classic on the U.S. East Coast and Great Lakes.
