Intrepid 9 Meter by Cape Dory
Description
In 1985, after the original cold-moulded wooden Intrepid 9-Meter had proved itself spectacularly fast but relatively expensive and maintenance-intensive, Cape Dory Yachts (through its newly created Intrepid Yachts division in East Taunton, Massachusetts) purchased the design rights and re-engineered Rodger Martin & Graham Dodd’s 1983 creation as a production fiberglass boat. Launched in 1986 as the “Intrepid 9-Meter by Intrepid Yachts, a Division of Cape Dory,” the glass version kept the identical hull lines, reverse transom, ultra-narrow beam (7 ft 10 in / 2.39 m), and deep fin keel with lead bulb (5 ft 10 in / 1.78 m draft), but gained a balsa-cored deck, a slightly taller and stiffer fractional rig (now 44–45 ft above deck), and a more refined interior. Displacement rose from the wooden boat’s 4,200 lb. to about 4,600–4,800 lb., yet performance remained virtually identical and, in many cases, marginally faster due to smoother hull finish and better stiffness.
