International J/24
Description
The International J/24 (1977–present) is the most successful one-design keelboat class in sailing history: a strict, 24-foot, five-person, fixed-keel trailer-sailer with over 5,500 boats built in 22 countries, active racing fleets on six continents, and a 48-year record of 70–100+ boat World Championships. At just 3,100 lb ready-to-sail (including 840 lb keel and 400 lb crew limit), it carries 260 sq ft of simple, class-legal Dacron sails on an aluminum fractional rig for explosive acceleration, easy planing into the mid-teens, and finger-light handling that has made generations of sailors grin. Designed by Rod Johnstone as the original “garage-built” J/Boat, it remains fully competitive whether the hull is 1977 or 2025, costs less to campaign than almost any modern sportboat, and is universally regarded as the gold standard for pure, level, affordable one-design racing that anyone can tow, launch, and win with.
