International 5.5M R-Yacht

International 5.5M R-Yacht

Description

The International 5.5 Metre (often abbreviated as 5.5mR or 5.5 Metre class and sometimes stylized as "5.5m R-Yacht" referring to the "R" in metre-class rating rules) is a renowned one-design/development racing keelboat class established under the International Rule. It was created as a more affordable alternative to the larger International 6 Metre class, providing similar high-level racing excitement but at lower cost. The class remains active today with an enthusiastic international fleet, though it's no longer Olympic. History and Origins The rule was conceived in 1937 by British designer Charles E. Nicholson (of Camper & Nicholson fame) as a redesign/scale-down of the 6mR to reduce expenses. The first conforming boat (K-1 "The Deb") launched in 1949. Recognized as an International class by the IYRU (now World Sailing) in 1950. Olympic class from 1952 (Helsinki) through 1968 (Acapulco), after which it lost status due to rising one-off build costs (similar fate as other metre classes in Olympics). Still thrives as a development/construction class with ongoing evolution, active World Championships, and divisions for age groups. The class formula balances length, girth, sail area, and displacement to produce fast, elegant, responsive yachts that excel in tactical racing. They're known for beautiful lines, excellent upwind performance, and thrilling downwind surfing in a breeze. Modern boats are state-of-the-art, often winning with razor-sharp optimization.
