Ingrid 38

Description

The Ingrid 38 is a classic heavy-displacement blue-water cruising sailboat, renowned for its seaworthy double-ender hull inspired by Norwegian rescue boats, offering exceptional stability and comfort in heavy weather while prioritizing safety over speed. Originally designed in 1934 by William Atkin as a wooden ketch based on Colin Archer's "Redningskoite" (rescue boat) lines, the fiberglass version was produced by Bluewater Boat Co. in Florida from 1971 to 1983, with over 140 hulls built—many sold as bare hulls for owner completion. It's constructed of thick hand-laid fiberglass (up to 1.5 inches in the hull bottom) with an encapsulated lead ballast and full keel for ultimate directional stability, available as a gaff or Marconi cutter or ketch rig. The design's finer bow entry (Atkin's refinement) cushions wave impacts, making it a proven circumnavigator and tradewind specialist, though it's not the fastest in light air due to its wetted surface.
