Hylas 47 (Stevens 47)
Description
The Hylas 47 is a premium Taiwanese-built recreational sailboat designed as a versatile center-cockpit blue-water cruiser, acclaimed for its classic Sparkman & Stephens lines, exceptional seaworthiness, and charter-proven comfort. Originally introduced as the Stevens 47 in 1981 by Sparkman & Stephens for Queen Long Marine (Taiwan), it was rebranded and refined as the Hylas 47 starting in 1986 under Hylas Yachts USA. Production continued until around 1991, with approximately 82 units built under the Hylas name (following 56 Stevens 47s), based on historical records from builder archives and broker data—totaling ~138 for the design overall. It's constructed of solid hand-laid fiberglass with an encapsulated lead keel and skeg-hung rudder for durability and protected steering. The design, inspired by the Gulfstar 50, evolved into the popular Hylas 49 in 1991 with added freeboard and a sugar-scoop stern, but the 47 remains a cult favorite for its stiff, balanced performance and timeless aesthetics.
