Hurley 20
Description
The Hurley 20 is a classic small family/trailerable cruising sailboat built by Hurley Marine Ltd. in Plymouth, UK, from 1966 onward (with production continuing under successors like South Coast Marine or Ravensail into later decades, though most examples are from the 1960s–1970s). It was designed by Ian L. Anderson (British naval architect, same designer as the popular Hurley 22, emphasizing seaworthiness and performance in compact hulls); production numbers are not precisely tallied in sources but appear moderate (hundreds built, though less common than the 22; a niche classic with a dedicated following via the Hurley Owners Association). Special features include its twin/bilge keel (or fin keel variant in some) for shallow draft access and drying out on tidal flats, solid fiberglass (GRP) construction for durability, fractional sloop rig for easy handling, narrow beam and heavy ballast for exceptional stiffness/self-righting, compact 4-berth layout with basic galley/head, low freeboard for traditional lines, and a strong reputation as a seaworthy "pocket bluewater" boat—capable of challenging conditions.
