Hurley 22 (Ravensail, Hurlwind)
Description
The Hurley 22 is a classic small family cruising sailboat built primarily by Hurley Marine Ltd. in the UK (Plympton, England) from 1966 to around 1972 (with production resuming under South Coast Marine, Ravensail—sometimes called Hurley 22R—and later Hurlwind into the late 1980s/1990). It was designed by Ian L. Anderson (a British naval architect who emphasized seaworthiness in compact designs); total production numbers reached approximately 1,203 hulls (Hurley Marine built around 731 before ceasing in 1972, with the rest by successors; some licensed builds in Holland noted). Special features include its heavy ballast ratio (~57–60% in early designs, often iron or lead) for exceptional stiffness and self-righting capability, narrow beam and deep fin keel (or optional bilge/twin keels drawing ~2.5 ft / 0.76 m) for stability in rough water, solid fiberglass (GRP) construction with skeg-hung rudder in later models (earlier had spade rudder), masthead sloop rig, compact yet practical interior (4 berths, basic galley/head), low freeboard for classic lines, and a legendary reputation as one of the most seaworthy pocket cruisers of its era—often called a "little bluewater bulldog".
