Description

The Hunter 27 Edge (2008–2012, sometimes badged Hunter Edge 27) is a bold, hybrid trailerable “sport-cruiser” designed by Glenn Henderson and built by Hunter Marine as a direct evolution of the Hunter 27X/27-3, but with a radical twist: it combines water ballast with an optional factory-installed 4-stroke outboard (50–75 hp) mounted in a well and a fully planning hull capable of 18–20 knots under power. At 27 feet 5 inches LOA, 9-foot 11-inch beam, and just 6,000 lbs trailering weight (including tandem-axle trailer), it uses 900 lbs of water ballast (draft 1 ft 6 in empty / 4 ft 6 in full) to provide stability under sail yet allow easy ramp launching and retrieval. The backstay-less B&R fractional rig carries a big roachy mainsail (~200 sq ft) and roller-furling jib (~370 sq ft total upwind), plus an asymmetrical spinnaker on a retractable sprit, delivering lively performance (PHRF ~180–195) while remaining forgiving. The cockpit is enormous with wheel steering, fold-down transom seat, and full walk-through transom; below, it offers a surprisingly bright and open layout with a huge aft king berth, forward V-berth, full galley, enclosed head with shower, and 6 ft 4 in headroom. Marketed as the boat that “sails like a 27-footer and powers like a bowrider,” the Hunter 27 Edge appealed to sailors who wanted quick weekend getaways, the ability to explore thin water, and the option to motor home fast when the wind dies. Though production was short (fewer than 200 built), it retains a passionate cult following today for its unique blend of sail/power versatility and genuine overnight comfort in a fully trailerable package.
