Hunter Legend 43
Description
The Hunter Legend 43 (built 1987–1991, approximately 120 hulls) is a rare and highly regarded center-cockpit cruiser that bridged the gap between Hunter’s mainstream Legend line and their more serious offshore Passage series. Designed by the Hunter Design Team under Cortland Steck, it stretches 43 ft LOA (42 ft LWL) with a generous 14 ft beam and a moderate displacement of 23,800 lbs (9,800 lbs ballast). It was offered with either a shoal-draft wing keel (5 ft 6 in) or deep fin (6 ft 9 in). It features the full B&R backstay-less fractional rig with sharply swept spreaders, a large roachy mainsail (~420 sq ft) and 135–150% roller-furling genoa (total upwind ~900–950 sq ft), giving surprisingly good performance for a center-cockpit boat of the era (PHRF typically 114–126). The raised center cockpit is huge, with wheel steering and one of the first production walk-through reverse transoms with integrated swim platform on a 43-footer. Below, the interior is genuinely palatial for 1987: an enormous aft owner’s stateroom with true centerline queen berth and private en-suite head with separate shower, a spacious forward guest cabin with its own en-suite head, a massive U-shaped galley, proper nav station, and a bright saloon with over 6 ft 8 in headroom — comfortably sleeping six (or seven) in real luxury.
