Hunter 40 Legend
Description
The Hunter Legend 40 (built 1985–1992, with roughly 600 hulls produced) is one of the most successful and recognizable 40-foot cruisers Hunter Marine ever made, and a landmark design that helped define the company’s “big-volume, easy-sailing” philosophy in the late 1980s. Designed by the Hunter Design Team under Cortland Steck, it stretches 39 ft 7 in LOA with a very beamy 13 ft 5 in hull, moderate displacement of 19,500 lbs (7,900 lbs ballast), and was offered with either a shoal-draft wing keel (5 ft) or deeper fin (6 ft 6 in). It introduced the signature B&R backstay-less rig with sharply swept spreaders, a huge roachy mainsail (~380 sq ft), 135–150% roller-furling genoa (total upwind ~850–900 sq ft), and an optional asymmetrical spinnaker on a short sprit—delivering surprisingly good performance for its size and era (PHRF typically 120–135).
