Hunter 37

Description

The first Hunter 37 (1981–1984, often called the Hunter 37 Cherubini or Hunter 37-1 to avoid confusion with later models) is a completely different boat from the later Legend 37/37.5 series. Designed by John Cherubini and built by Hunter Marine in Florida, it was introduced in 1980 as a serious, traditionally styled cutter-rigged cruiser meant to compete with the Valiant 40 and Westsail 32 crowd. With only about 120 hulls produced before it was replaced by the more modern Legend series, it is now considered a rare and highly respected classic. At 36 ft 10 in LOA with a moderate 11 ft 10 in beam, heavy displacement of 17,800 lbs (7,500 lbs encapsulated lead ballast), and a full keel with cutaway forefoot drawing 5 ft 3 in (or optional 4 ft shoal draft), it has a rugged solid-fiberglass hull, skeg-hung rudder, and a very seaworthy underbody. The standard rig is a cutter with a high-aspect mainsail (~340 sq ft), yankee jib, and staysail (total upwind ~750 sq ft), though many were delivered as sloops. Below, the teak-rich interior is genuinely offshore-oriented: large aft stateroom with double berth and en-suite head, forward V-berth with second head, full U-shaped galley, proper nav station, and a saloon that sleeps two more—realistically accommodating six for long passages with 6 ft 4 in headroom.
