Hunter 30 (1973)
Description
The Hunter 30 (1973–1983, often called the Hunter 30-1 or Cherubini Hunter 30 to distinguish it from later models) is an American masthead sloop designed by John Cherubini and built by Hunter Marine, with over 1,000 hulls produced—making it one of the most successful 30-foot cruisers of the 1970s. At 30 feet 11 inches LOA with a moderate 10-foot beam and a displacement of 9,700 lbs (4,200 lbs lead ballast), it features a long fin keel drawing 5 feet 3 inches (or optional shoal-draft 4 feet 2 inches) and a skeg-hung rudder for good tracking and seaworthiness. The rig carries a generous 440–460 sq ft upwind (tall fully battened main + 130–150% genoa), giving surprisingly lively performance for its era (PHRF typically 180–195) and excellent light-air speed. Below, the teak-rich interior is remarkably spacious and practical: large V-berth forward, proper enclosed head with shower, U-shaped galley, big dinette that converts to a double, nav station, and a true quarter berth aft—comfortably sleeping six with over 6 feet of headroom. Known for solid fiberglass construction, a stiff and forgiving nature, and genuine coastal/offshore capability (many have crossed oceans), the Hunter 30 was marketed as an affordable family cruiser that could still win races.
