Hunter 27-2
Description
The Hunter 27-2 (sometimes just called the Hunter 27 1989–1994) is an American fractional-rig cruiser designed by the Hunter Design Team and built from 1989 to 1994, with roughly 500 hulls produced as a complete redesign and replacement of the original 1974 Cherubini Hunter 27. At 26 feet 7 inches LOA with a very beamy 9-foot hull and a displacement of 6,400 lbs (2,400 lbs ballast), it introduced several Hunter trademarks that would become standard on later models: a walk-through transom with sugar-scoop stern and swim platform, wheel steering on a pedestal, a B&R backstay-less rig with swept spreaders, and a large elliptical rudder for excellent maneuverability. The rig carries a fully battened mainsail of about 180 sq ft plus a roller-furling 110–135% genoa for roughly 340–360 sq ft upwind, with an optional asymmetrical spinnaker on a short sprit. Below, it offers a bright, open layout with a huge aft cabin (athwartships double berth), private forward V-berth, full galley, enclosed head with shower, and a dinette that converts to another double—sleeping six in real comfort and 6-foot-plus headroom. Available with a fixed wing keel (3 ft 6 in draft) or centerboard (3 ft up / 6 ft down), it was marketed as an easy-to-handle coastal cruiser that could still be trailered with a sturdy truck. Faster, stiffer, and far more modern-feeling than the original 27, the Hunter 27-2 remains popular on both coasts and the Great Lakes, with active racing fleets and a reputation as one of the best-value 1990s family cruisers under 30 feet.
