Hunter 270
Description
The Hunter 270 (built 2000–2006) is an American trailerable cruiser designed by the Hunter Design Team as a direct successor to the Hunter 26/260, with roughly 400 hulls produced. At 26 feet 3 inches LOA (about 28 feet on deck with the sugar-scoop transom) and a generous 8-foot 11-inch beam, it weighs only 5,300 lbs on the trailer thanks to its 2,000-lb water-ballast system (1 ft 9 in draft empty, 6 ft full). It features Hunter’s signature backstay-less B&R fractional rig with swept spreaders, a large roachy fully battened mainsail (~170 sq ft), roller-furling 110–135% jib (total upwind ~320 sq ft), and an asymmetrical spinnaker on a retractable bowsprit. Key upgrades over the 260 include a larger cockpit with wheel steering, a full walk-through transom with integrated swim platform and boarding ladder, a folding helm seat, and a noticeably roomier interior: huge aft athwartships double berth under the cockpit, private forward V-berth, enclosed head with shower, full galley with two-burner stove and icebox, and standing headroom throughout (pop-top adds another 6 inches). Fast, stiff once the tanks are filled, and genuinely comfortable for a family of four or five on week-long cruises, the Hunter 270 can be towed by most mid-size SUVs and remains one of the most practical and popular water-ballasted trailer-sailers ever built, with active owner groups on both coasts and the Great Lakes.
