Hunter 27-3
Description
The Hunter 27-3 (formally the Hunter 27, built 2004–2012 and sometimes marketed as the Hunter Edge 27 in its later years) is a modern American trailerable cruiser designed by Glenn Henderson, with over 600 hulls produced. At 27 feet 5 inches LOA with a very wide 9-foot 11-inch beam and an all-up trailering weight of just 5,950 lbs (including the optional factory tandem-axle trailer), it was created as one of the largest and most comfortable boats that can still be legally towed behind a half-ton pickup or SUV without permits in most states. It features Hunter’s backstay-less B&R fractional rig with swept spreaders, a large roachy fully battened mainsail (~200 sq ft) and roller-furling 110% jib (~370 sq ft total upwind), plus an asymmetrical spinnaker on a retractable carbon sprit. Standard equipment includes a shoal-draft wing keel (3 ft 6 in) or optional deeper fin, wheel steering with a folding Lewmar wheel, a huge walk-through transom with swim platform and fold-away helm seat, and a cavernous cockpit that seats eight comfortably. Below, the bright, open interior boasts a giant aft cabin with a true king-size berth, private forward V-berth, full galley, enclosed head with shower, and over 6 ft 4 in headroom throughout—genuinely sleeping six adults. Fast (PHRF around 180–195), stiff, easy to single-hand, and packed with family-friendly features, the Hunter 27-3 (and its near-identical twin, the Hunter 27X that added water ballast) remains extremely popular on lakes and coastal waters, with strong owner groups and excellent resale values today.
