Hunter 20
Description
The Hunter 20 is an American trailerable pocket cruiser designed by the Hunter Design Team and built by Hunter Marine from 1983 to 1987 (sometimes referred to as the Hunter 19-2 or simply H20 in later literature). At 20 feet LOA with a very beamy 7-foot 10-inch hull and a light displacement of around 1,800 lbs (600–700 lbs ballast in the shoal winged keel), it was conceived as a larger, more comfortable evolution of the Hunter 18.5, offering genuine standing headroom under a pop-top camper cover and sleeping space for four. The fractional sloop rig carries a fully battened mainsail of about 115 sq ft plus a roller-furling 150% genoa for roughly 180 sq ft upwind, with an optional asymmetrical spinnaker on a short sprit; the mast is deck-stepped and can be raised single-handed with the standard gin pole system. Key features include a swing keel (2 ft up / 4 ft 6 in down), kick-up rudder, foam flotation, a huge self-bailing cockpit, and a surprisingly roomy interior with V-berth, two full-length settees that convert to a double, a small galley area, and a portable head. Extremely popular in the 1980s for its ease of trailering behind a regular car, quick rigging, and family-friendly layout, the Hunter 20 remains a common sight on inland lakes and protected coastal waters, with active owner groups and a reputation as one of the most spacious and forgiving 20-footers ever built.
