Hullmaster 31 / Alcona 31
Description
The Hullmaster 31 (also known as the Alcona 31 in later or variant forms) is a classic Canadian-built full-keel (long keel) cruising sailboat, essentially a variant or near-identical copy of the Ted Brewer-designed Douglas 31/32 series. The design originated in the late 1960s, with Hullmaster Boats, Ltd. (Picton, Ontario) producing the Hullmaster 31 from 1973 to 1979 after acquiring molds from the original Douglas Marine Craft. When Hullmaster went bankrupt, some molds went to others (e.g., Doug Smith for kit boats, and Alcona Fiberglass Mfg. in Barrie, Ontario, which built at least a few as the Alcona 31 around 1978–1979, sometimes with minor tweaks like a reverse transom). It's a rare, solid fiberglass cruiser-racer suited for coastal/bluewater passages, Great Lakes use, or extended cruising — known for sturdy construction, good stability, and seaworthiness in its era.
