Hughes 25
Description
The Hughes 25 is a Canadian-built masthead sloop designed by Howard Hughes and introduced in 1968, with over 200 hulls produced by Hughes Boat Works in Ontario until the company closed in 1984. At 25 feet 2 inches LOA with a modest 8-foot beam and full keel drawing 3 feet 3 inches (or optional keel/centerboard version drawing 2 feet 9 inches to 5 feet 6 inches), it features a rugged fiberglass hull, teak trim, and a conservative but seaworthy underbody that earned it a reputation as a tough, no-nonsense pocket cruiser. The interior is remarkably spacious for its size, offering standing headroom under the pop-top (or optional fixed coachroof), a V-berth, two full-length settee berths, a quarter berth, an enclosed head, and a functional galley—comfortably sleeping four adults. With a sail area of about 300 sq ft and a displacement of 4,200 lbs. (ballast 1,800 lbs.), it is stiff, well-mannered in a blow, and surprisingly quick for a full-keel design, making it a favorite Great Lakes and coastal cruiser. Still widely sailed and actively raced in one-design fleets in Ontario and British Columbia, the Hughes 25 remains a beloved, affordable classic that punches far above its weight in both comfort and durability.
