Hotfoot 31
Description
The Hotfoot 31 is a rare, Canadian-built ultralight grand-prix racer/cruiser designed by Steve Killing and produced in very limited numbers by Hotfoot Boats (later Ontario Yachts) between 1984 and the early 1990s, with only about a dozen hulls ever completed. Stretching 31 feet LOA with a slippery 11-foot beam and an astonishingly low displacement of just 4,200 lbs (roughly 60% of a typical 31-footer of the era), it features a deep 6-foot fin with a lead torpedo bulb, a towering triple-spreader fractional rig carrying over 600 sq ft upwind (square-top main + masthead blade), and enormous asymmetrical spinnakers exceeding 1,200 sq ft flown from a long carbon sprit. Built with Kevlar/foam sandwich and a stripped-out interior (minimal bulkheads, pipe berths, tiny galley, and open head), it was conceived as a no-compromise, fully trailerable Mumm 36 competitor capable of sustained planning on reaches and blistering PHRF ratings in the low 30s to high 20s. Renowned for terrifying speed in 15+ knots yet surprisingly well-mannered when sailed conservatively, the Hotfoot 31 remains one of the most extreme production monohulls ever built in North America and is still chased by Great Lakes and West Coast sailors who worship raw boat speed above all else.
