Hobie Wave

Description

The Hobie Wave is a 13 ft (4.0 m) rotomolded polyethylene beach catamaran introduced in 1994 and still in full production in 2025, designed as the simplest, toughest, and most beginner-friendly high-performance cat Hobie has ever made. With a 7 ft beam, 240 lb all-up weight, and a distinctive boomless, fully battened 95 sq ft mainsail on an unstayed two-piece aluminum mast, the Wave can be rigged and launched by one person in under 10 minutes and literally dragged up any beach without damage. It has no jib, no trapeze, and no adjustable rigging—everything is color-coded and foolproof—yet it still flies a hull in 8–10 knots and tops 18+ knots downwind with a skilled solo sailor. The patented Hobie kick-up rudders, mesh trampoline, and high-volume hulls make it virtually uncapsizable and forgiving enough for resorts, sailing schools, and first-time buyers, while still fast enough to keep experienced racers grinning. Over 7,000 have been sold worldwide (the best-selling Hobie cat of the last 30 years), and it remains the default “go-to” boat for community sailing programs, summer camps, and anyone who wants genuine Hobie performance without the complexity of a Hobie 16.
