Hinterhoeller 28
Description
The Hinterhoeller 28 (also known as the HR-28 or Hinterhoeller HR 28) is a classic Canadian cruiser/racer from the late 1960s, designed by George Hinterhoeller (founder of Hinterhoeller Yachts and creator of the famous Shark 24). It evolved as a slightly larger, more comfortable sibling to the Shark 24, retaining a similar fast, responsive hull shape but with increased interior volume, better accommodations, and a focus on weekend cruising or club racing. It's praised for its lively performance, solid fiberglass construction, forgiving handling, and durability — a "good old boat" with a cult following in the Great Lakes region for its build quality and fun sailing characteristics. Built by Hinterhoeller Yachts Ltd. in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada, from around 1967 to the early 1970s. Some sources note a transition period where later hulls may have had C&C influences after company ties, but the core design remains Hinterhoeller's. Production Quantities: Limited — exact numbers are not widely documented, but likely in the low hundreds or fewer, making surviving examples somewhat rare today.
