Description
The Hinckley Sou’wester 42 Yawl (1959–1993, 103 built) is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful and capable full-keel, centerboard bluewater yachts ever produced in fiberglass. Designed by McLear & Harris with Henry Hinckley’s direct input, she measures 42 ft 9 in LOA, carries a low-aspect yawl rig of 760–820 sq ft that balances perfectly in any weather, and features a long waterline, moderate beam, and a bronze centerboard that gives 5 ft 11 in draft up or over 10 ft down. With bulletproof hand-laid construction, 24,500 lbs. displacement (9,000 lbs. external lead), legendary stiffness, and the classic Hinckley teak interior (V-berth forward, quarter cabin aft, U-galley, full nav station), she combines timeless beauty, effortless heavy-weather handling, and genuine transoceanic ability. All 103 Hinckley Sou’wester 42/42½/43 yawls (and the closely related ketch-rigged versions) were built exclusively by The Hinckley Company at their Southwest Harbor and later Trenton, Maine, yards.
