Hinckley Pilot 35 Yawl
Description
The Hinckley Pilot 35 is a classic offshore cruising sloop designed by Sparkman & Stephens (design #1727) and built by Henry R. Hinckley & Company in Southwest Harbor, Maine, USA. Produced from 1962 to 1975, 117 examples were completed (primarily sloops, with 12 yawls and a few custom variants, including about a dozen licensed builds for the Chilean Navy), evolving from earlier wooden Pilots into a fiberglass icon emphasizing seaworthiness, timeless aesthetics, and simplicity. This long-keel vessel features a raked stem, counter stern, and moderate overhangs for elegant lines, with a robust hand-laid fiberglass hull (up to 1-inch thick at the keel) and a hull-deck joint secured by a bolted aluminum toe rail. Known for its balanced performance—strong upwind in moderate winds, forgiving motion in seaways, and single-handed manageability—it's a favorite for coastal and bluewater sailors, though the short rig limits light-air speed, and the full keel yields a wide turning radius (poor in reverse). Interiors use Philippine mahogany sheathing over fiberglass, with teak-and-holly soles and layouts sleeping 4–6 (V-berth forward, saloon settees, compact galley, and cramped head). Construction is legendary, with minimal failures reported over decades, though minor blistering or mast-step issues may arise in vintage hulls.
