Hinckley Bermuda 40 MK III
Description
The Hinckley Bermuda 40 Mark III is the final evolution of the iconic American sailboat designed by Henry R. Hinckley & Co. as a pioneering fiberglass offshore cruiser-racer, renowned for its elegant lines, seaworthiness, and performance in coastal and bluewater sailing. Introduced in 1971 as the last major refinement of the original 1958 design (inspired by the Block Island 40), the Mark III incorporated updates like standard diesel engines, revised interiors with more teak and storage, improved cockpit ergonomics, and a shift toward sloop rigs (yawl remained available). Production ran until 1991 in Southwest Harbor, Maine, contributing to the model's total of 203 units built—one of the longest production runs for any fiberglass sailboat. It targeted experienced sailors seeking a fast, comfortable 40-footer for racing and family cruising, blending classic aesthetics with modern materials. Contemporary reviews hailed it as a "revolutionary" design for its wide beam on a 30 ft waterline, excellent stability, and "wet dream" appeal, though its teak-heavy build requires ongoing maintenance.
