Herreshoff Eagle

Description

The Herreshoff Eagle is a 22 ft 6 in (LOA) fractional sloop daysailer designed in 1975 by Halsey C. Herreshoff (grandson of Nathanael G. Herreshoff) and built in fiberglass by the Herreshoff Manufacturing Co. in Bristol, Rhode Island, from 1976 to 1982, with approximately 120 hulls produced. With classic Herreshoff proportions—long overhangs, low freeboard, graceful sheer, and a distinctive counter stern—the Eagle carries a full keel drawing 3 ft 3 in, 3,800 lbs displacement (1,600 lbs lead ballast), and a tall, bendy fractional rig with 240 sq ft of working sail that gives sparkling light-air performance and surprising speed for a keelboat of its era (PHRF around 225–240). The cockpit is huge and comfortable for six, while below there is sitting headroom, two 7-ft settee berths, a small galley area, and an enclosed head—making it a true weekender rather than a pure daysailer. Prized for its exquisite balance, fingertip helm, and timeless beauty, the Eagle was one of the first successful modern fiberglass interpretations of the classic Herreshoff spirit and remains actively sailed and fiercely loved on the U.S. East Coast, with an enthusiastic class association keeping the fleet racing and cruising nearly fifty years after the first launch.
