H-Boat
Description
The H-Boat (also styled H-boat or H-vene) is a Finnish-designed, strict one-design fiberglass keelboat that has become one of the most successful and enduring small racer-cruisers, with over 5,000 hulls built since production began in 1970. Designed by Hans Groop in 1967 (winning a Finnish competition for a modern GRP fleet racer with spinnaker), it received minor refinements by Paul Elvstrøm in 1971 and achieved international one-design status in 1977. The "H" derives from Hestia, the Greek goddess of the hearth. It's Europe's largest keelboat class and the second largest internationally, with a vibrant racing scene (World Championships since 1980) primarily in Nordic countries, Germany, Switzerland, and Central Europe, plus scattered fleets in the UK and US. Builders have included Artekno (Finland), Elvstrøm (Denmark), Ott Yacht (Germany), Frauscher (Austria), and currently Saare Yachts (Estonia) for new builds.
