Hartley 16 Catamaran (Fast Twin 16))

Hartley 16 Catamaran (Fast Twin 16))

Description

The Hartley 16 Catamaran (also known as the Fast Twin 16 or Fast Twin Catermaran) is a lightweight, high-speed 16-foot (4.88 m) catamaran designed by Richard Hartley (founder of Hartley Boats in New Zealand). It's part of Hartley's long history of affordable, plans-based boats for amateur builders, emphasizing simplicity, speed, and fun for day sailing, racing, or even fishing. This is a true catamaran (twin hulls) unlike the monohull Hartley TS16 trailer sailer (a popular plywood daysailer/cruiser often confused due to similar length and designer). The Fast Twin 16 is marketed as a "high speed craft" capable of speeds up to 20 mph (about 17 knots) under good conditions, thanks to its low weight, wide beam for stability, and generous sail area. It's suitable for racing, casual daysailing, or relaxed outings—very trailerable and easy to launch/retrieve. Plans are still available from Hartley Boats for plywood construction (often glass-sheathed for durability), making it accessible for DIY builders. It's not a mass-produced model, so most examples are home-built or small-yard produced.
