GULFSTAR 41
Description
The Gulfstar 41, designed by Vince and Richard Lazzara and produced by Gulfstar Yachts in St. Petersburg, Florida, from 1973 to 1975 with around 100 hulls built, is a classic center-cockpit bluewater cruiser renowned for its spacious accommodations, seaworthy hull, and balanced performance suited to extended offshore voyages or liveaboard life for couples or small families. Measuring 41 feet LOA with a 32-foot-6-inch LWL, 13-foot-2-inch beam, 9,500-pound displacement, and 3,000 pounds of external lead ballast yielding a solid .32 ballast/displacement ratio for stiffness and self-righting in heavy weather, it features a fin keel drawing 5 feet 2 inches (or optional shoal-draft at 4 feet 6 inches) and skeg-hung rudder paired with a masthead sloop rig (or ketch variant with 650 square feet of sail area)—delivering a SA/D ratio of 15.2 for moderate upwind speed (PHRF around 132) at a 7.5-knot hull speed, though its D/L ratio of 273 classifies it as a light cruiser rather than a heavy plodder. Constructed with hand-laid fiberglass for durability—often praised for withstanding knockdowns despite occasional blistering—the interior boasts 6 feet 4 inches of headroom in a luxurious teak-trimmed layout with V-berth forward, U-shaped galley, enclosed head with shower, convertible dinette, nav station, and spacious aft queen cabin for six, complemented by a protected cockpit and ample tanks (100 gallons water, 80 gallons fuel).
