Gulfstar 40 Sailmaster
Description
The Gulfstar 40 Sailmaster (also known as Gulfstar 40 CC or Gulfstar 40 Center Cockpit) is a capable, charter-oriented American center-cockpit cruising sailboat sharing the same hull as the Gulfstar 39 Sailmaster but reconfigured with a center cockpit for better offshore protection, helm dryness, and appeal in the charter market—often considered a practical step up in comfort and livability from earlier aft-cockpit Gulfstars like the 37 while remaining more manageable than larger models like the 44. Designer: Vince Lazzara and Richard (Dick) Lazzara (consistent with the Sailmaster series and Gulfstar's later designs). Year of Introduction: 1980 (some sources note around 1984 for specific builds). Production History: Built by Gulfstar Yachts in St. Petersburg/Tampa Bay, Florida, primarily in the early 1980s (around 1980–1984); production was very limited—only about a dozen hulls were produced, specifically for The Moorings charter fleet (a major client), making it one of the rarer Gulfstar models; this was during Gulfstar's "golden era" of improved quality after earlier production shortcuts, with solid fiberglass construction, teak interiors, and good build standards, though potential blister/osmosis issues (common in 1980s fiberglass) warrant a thorough survey, especially around the keel/hull joint. Key Features: Center-cockpit sloop rig (some ketch options) with a modern fin keel and skeg-hung rudder for responsive handling and protection; spacious, practical interior layout optimized for cruising/charter use—aft cabin (often centerline or offset berth), U-shaped galley, large salon, forward V-berth/head, excellent headroom/storage, and good natural light; excellent motion comfort, stiffness, and bluewater potential with stable, forgiving ride in rough conditions; ample tankage supports extended passages; moderate sail power prioritizes comfort and ease over high performance.
