Gulfstar 40(Hood)
Description
The Gulfstar 40 (Hood) is a rare, performance-oriented American cruising sailboat from Gulfstar's early transitional period, designed as a true performance cruiser/racer with classic lines, solid sailing characteristics, and a reputation as one of the best-performing models from the builder—distinct from the later center-cockpit Gulfstar 40 CC/Sailmaster (Lazzara-designed, charter-focused). Designer: Ted Hood (renowned for Hood Sailmakers, Little Harbor yachts, and similar Bristol-inspired designs; this was a custom collaboration during his influence as a Gulfstar dealer). Year of Introduction: 1976. Production History: Built by Gulfstar Yachts in St. Petersburg/Tampa Bay, Florida, from 1976 to 1978, with only a very limited run (estimates of fewer than 20 to around 19 hulls total), reflecting Gulfstar's brief experimentation with outsourced higher-performance designs before returning to in-house Lazzara models; quality was solid for the era with teak interiors and fiberglass construction, though early Gulfstars can show blister/osmosis issues (always survey the hull/keel joint thoroughly). Key Features: Aft-cockpit masthead sloop rig with a modern fin keel (or optional centerboard/shoal draft for versatility in shallower waters), responsive and quick handling with excellent upwind ability, good speed in moderate breezes (often 10+ knots), and a comfortable, cushy ride that handles chop without pounding; traditional layout sleeping 6 in two cabins (V-berth forward, settees/convertibles in salon, aft cabin), large cockpit (over 8 ft long), forepeak anchor storage, and ample overall volume; heavier displacement provides stiffness, good righting ability, and bluewater potential with excellent motion comfort in seas.
