Gulfstar 39
Description
The Gulfstar 39 Sailmaster (often abbreviated as GS 39) is an American coastal cruiser-racer sailboat designed by Vince Lazzara and introduced in 1981 by Gulfstar Yachts in Tampa, Florida. Production ran until 1984, with approximately 57–60 units built (hull #59 is a notable example, "The Glass Slipper"), making it a limited-run model from Gulfstar's "golden era." Known for its innovative single-stateroom layout (controversial at launch for ditching the traditional quarter berth in favor of a navigation station/office and deep cockpit locker), it's geared toward cruising couples seeking privacy and efficiency. The Mk II version (1982) added a portside quarter berth. Built with high-quality fiberglass (solid below waterline, balsa-cored deck/topsides), it's praised for stability and seaworthiness in moderate conditions but critiqued for underpowered light-air performance. A center-cockpit variant (Gulfstar 40 Sailmaster, ~12 units) was adapted for charters.
