Grand Banks 22
Description
The Grand Banks 22, a compact trailerable cruiser-racer designed by Robert Newton and produced by American Marine (later Grand Banks Yachts) in Hong Kong from 1962 to 1966 with around 100 hulls built, embodies the early evolution of the iconic trawler style in a downsized, wooden package suited for weekend sailors and coastal explorers. Measuring 22 feet LOA with a 20-foot LWL, 8-foot beam, and 3-foot-6-inch draft on its full-keel underbody, it displaces 3,200 pounds (ballast 1,000 pounds of lead) and features a fractional sloop rig with 220 square feet of sail area—yielding a SA/D ratio of 16.5 for lively performance (PHRF around 240) at speeds up to 6 knots, complemented by an optional outboard well for auxiliary power up to 6 hp. Handcrafted from Philippine mahogany planks over white oak frames with traditional brightwork accents, it offers a cozy cuddy cabin with V-berth forward, portable head, and small dinette convertible to a double berth for two, plus a functional cockpit for day use; while not bluewater-rated, its seaworthy lines and simple construction earned praise for stability in chop, though maintenance-intensive wood demands vigilant care against rot. Discontinued as the line scaled up to larger classics like the GB36,
