Glen L Amigo Sloop
Description
The Glen-L Amigo, a robust 25-foot LOA trailerable offshore cruising sloop designed by Ken Hankinson in the late 1970s for Glen-L Marine Designs, stands as a heavy-displacement pocket cruiser that belies its compact size with serious bluewater aspirations, blending full-keel seaworthiness and dual-cabin privacy for couples or small families embarking on coastal passages, ICW jaunts, or even Hawaii crossings as documented by owners. Measuring 25 feet LOA (22'6" LWL) with a 9-foot beam and 4-foot draft on a full keel with integrated ballast (displacement ~8,500 pounds for a 35% ballast ratio and comfort ratio ~32), it delivers a stable, sea kindly motion with hull speed ~6.7 knots under its masthead or optional gaff sloop rig carrying 400 square feet of sail (SA/D ~15 for balanced progress in 15–25 knots, with self-tending jib and cockpit-led sheets for single handing). Built via strip-plank plywood (local spruce or cedar over juniper frames, sheathed in fiberglass/epoxy for durability; 1,500–2,500 build hours using full-size patterns), the design features a self-draining cockpit long enough for sleeping, a divided layout with 6-foot headroom, forward V-berth and hanging locker, U-galley with gimbaled stove and huge cockpit-accessible icebox, convertible dinette/berth, aft quarter berth (sleeping 4–5), and 50-gallon water capacity for extended autonomy.
