Glen L 30

Description

The Glen L 30 (also known as the Glen-L 30 or Yankee One-Design), a sleek fiberglass one-design racer-cruiser penned by Glen L. Witt in 1962 for his Glen-L Marine Designs catalog, embodies the firm's ethos of empowering amateur builders with high-performance sailboats that blend classic lines, modern materials, and offshore capability in a trailerable package. Measuring 30 feet LOA with a 24-foot waterline, 9-foot beam, and 4 feet 6 inches draft on a fin keel with spade rudder (displacement 6,800 pounds, 40% ballast ratio for excellent stiffness and a comfort ratio ~22), it features a masthead sloop rig with 420 square feet of sail (SA/D ratio 18.5 for lively acceleration, hull speed 6.6 knots), delivering 7–9 knot reaches in 12–18 knots while remaining forgiving for club racing or coastal passages. Designed for stitch-and-glue plywood/epoxy or cold-molded wood construction (with fiberglass sheathing options), it includes full plans for a spacious interior: 6'2" headroom, V-berth forward, U-shaped galley with sink and stove, enclosed head with shower, nav station, and quarter berths sleeping six—ideal for weeklong family cruises on the Great Lakes or Pacific Northwest. Powered by an inboard diesel (15–25 hp Yanmar or Volvo) or optional outboard, it motors at 6 knots; builders praise its balanced helm, dry deck, and minimal maintenance, with many completing Transpac qualifiers or East Coast deliveries. Over 150 sets of plans sold since introduction, fostering scattered one-design fleets and custom builds (some professional yards offered turnkey versions in the 1970s–1980s).
