Glen L 19
Description
The Glen-L 19, a stylish 19-foot trailerable overnighter sloop designed by Glen L. Witt in the 1970s and offered through Glen-L Marine Designs, captures the allure of classic pocket cruising with its rakish lines, optional full-length "black-out" side windows for a sleek silhouette, and lightweight plywood construction tailored for amateur builders seeking coastal or ICW adventures in a garage-friendly package. Measuring 19 feet LOA (17' LWL) with an 8-foot beam and 10-inch draft (centerboard up; 4 feet down with a steel plate foil and internal ballast like "steel pigs" for stability), it displaces 2,200 pounds, enabling effortless towing behind a mid-size car on the optional Series 1700 trailer and solo launching; the masthead sloop rig deploys 280 square feet of sail (SA/D ~18 for lively performance, hull speed ~5.7 knots with 5–7 knots reaching in 10–15 knots breeze) on a tabernacle-stepped aluminum mast for easy setup, controlled with minimal fittings for single handing. Built via plywood-on-frame marine plywood (¼-inch planking over oak stringers, sheathed in fiberglass/epoxy for durability; 600–900 build hours using full-size patterns), the design innovates with no intrusive centerboard trunk, granting exceptional cabin spaciousness with 5'10" headroom, V-berth forward, U-galley nook, convertible settees (sleeping 4), enclosed chemical head, and ample storage—plus a generous self-bailing cockpit for day sails.
