Gemini 31 (3000)
Description
The Gemini 31 (also known as the Gemini 3000), a pioneering American-built cruising catamaran designed by British multihull enthusiast Tony Smith and produced by Performance Cruising Inc. from 1981 to 1990, rose from the ashes of a devastating factory fire that destroyed Smith's prior Telstar trimaran molds, repurposing the lines of the 1969 Aristocat 30 by Musters and Shaw to create the first U.S. production cat of its kind. Measuring 30 feet 9 inches in length overall (LOA) with a narrow 14-foot beam for easy marina berthing and trailering, it features a lightweight fiberglass hull (displacement around 6,200 pounds), shallow draft of 1 foot 6 inches with boards up (4 feet down), and a fractional sloop rig with 420 square feet of sail area, delivering spirited performance in light airs while prioritizing stability and coastal seaworthiness over high-speed racing. Accommodations include standing headroom (6 feet 2 inches), a saloon with U-shaped galley, nav station, two private double cabins fore and aft, and a convertible dinette for up to six berths, all in a compact yet airy layout ideal for couples or small families embarking on extended voyages. Powered by an outboard-equipped leg-drive system (typically a 30-35 hp Mercury or Tohatsu), it offers efficient motoring at 6-7 knots; over 150 hulls were built, earning acclaim for affordability and reliability,
