Fuji 45
Description
The Fuji 45 is a classic 45'0" (13.7 m) heavy-displacement cruising ketch designed by the esteemed John G. Alden (design #744) and built by Fuji Yacht Builders Ltd. in Yokosuka, Japan, starting in 1976, with production continuing into the early 1980s as part of the yard's lineup of high-quality export sailboats emphasizing seaworthiness and craftsmanship. Known for its solid hand-laid fiberglass hull (up to 1" thick in critical areas), encapsulated iron ballast, and elegant lines featuring a clipper bow, canoe stern, and modified full keel with cutaway forefoot for balanced tracking and maneuverability, the Fuji 45 offers exceptional stability and a sea-kindly motion in heavy weather, making it a favorite for offshore passages and liveaboard cruising—though its modest sail area (around 800–900 sq ft) suits it better for downwind runs than light-air upwind work. Available in two variants—the original center-cockpit Mk I and the aft-cockpit Mk II (with only about 11 built, sharing the same hull molds but differing deck and cabin layouts for improved visibility and space)—it accommodates 4–6 comfortably with two staterooms, a spacious saloon, galley, and nav station finished in exquisite teak joinery.
