Fuji 40
Description
The Fuji 40 is a sturdy 39'10" (12.1 m) heavy-displacement sloop designed by the prestigious Sparkman & Stephens firm (design #2292) and built by Fuji Yacht Builders Ltd. in Yokosuka, Japan, from 1977 to 1979, with only about 13 hulls produced, making it one of the rarer gems in Fuji's lineup of high-quality export cruisers. Featuring a modern underbody with a long fin keel, full skeg-hung rudder, clipper bow, and canoe stern for balanced performance and tracking, it's constructed with thick hand-laid fiberglass hulls (up to 1" thick), encapsulated iron ballast, and foam-cored decks, prioritizing seaworthiness over speed—though its modest sail area (690 sq ft) and high displacement/length ratio (around 300–350) classify it as underpowered for light winds, excelling instead in a fresh breeze up to its 7.4-knot hull speed with rock-steady stability and a sea-kindly motion in heavy weather. The spacious teak-finished interior accommodates 4–6 in a traditional layout with V-berth forward, saloon, galley, nav station, and aft cabin, praised for its roominess and comfort during offshore passages,
