Freedom 40
Description
The Freedom 40, a high-performance center-cockpit ketch designed by David Pedrick and built by Tillotson-Pearson (TPI) in Rhode Island from 1986 to 1991, marked a departure from the brand’s signature unstayed rigs to a more conventional aluminum double-spreader masthead ketch with stainless standing rigging, targeting serious blue water cruisers seeking speed, stability, and volume in a 40-foot package optimized for trade wind passages and liveaboard comfort. Measuring 40'0" LOA on a 13'4" beam, with 17,500 lbs displacement and 6,500 lbs lead ballast in a 6'0" fin keel (or 4'6" shoal), the balsa-cored, SCRIMP-infused hull delivers a SA/D ratio of ~16, 7–8 knot cruising in 15–20 knots, and a Comfort Ratio over 40 for seakindly motion, with the ketch rig’s split sailplan enabling easy reefing and balanced helm under autopilot even in 30+ knots. The teak-trimmed interior boasts 6'6" headroom, sleeping six via a private aft owner’s stateroom with centerline queen and en-suite head/shower, walkthrough galley to port, spacious saloon with U-dinette, nav station, forward guest cabin with double berth, and second head—ideal for couples or charter, though the center-cockpit layout sacrifices some cockpit size. Roughly 50 hulls were produced, many outfitted for circumnavigation.
