Freedom 40/40
Description
The Freedom 40/40 is a versatile and seaworthy bluewater cruiser designed by David Pedrick and built by Tillotson Pearson Inc. (later Freedom Yachts) from 1993 to 1998, with approximately 33 units produced, renowned for its innovative free-standing fractional sloop rig and self-tending "Beirig" jib that simplifies short-handed sailing without compromising performance. With a fin keel and spade rudder hull (or optional shoal-draft wing keel), it measures 40.42 feet LOA, 35.08 feet LWL, and 13.50 feet beam, displacing 23,713 pounds with 10,754 pounds of lead ballast for stability, achieving a sail area of 791 square feet powered by a 45-hp Yanmar diesel engine, 62 gallons of fuel, and 106 gallons of water capacity. Its heavy displacement-to-length ratio of 245 suits long-distance voyaging with good motion in rough seas, while a comfort ratio of 31.21 and capsize screening of 1.88 confirm its bluewater credentials; though underpowered with a sail area-to-displacement ratio of 15.39, it excels in stability (ballast-to-displacement of 45.35) and ease of handling, making it a favorite for couples seeking privacy in its spacious two-cabin interior and large cockpit.
