Freedom 21
Description
The Freedom 21, a compact American trailerable sailboat designed by innovative sailmaker Gary Mull (often associated with the Hoyt rig's free-standing carbon fiber mast) and built by Tillotson-Pearson for Freedom Yachts from 1982 to 1987, revolutionized short-handed coastal cruising with its unstayed fractional sloop or catboat configuration, emphasizing simplicity, performance, and ease of handling in a lightweight 21-foot package that displaces just 2,450 pounds (with 1,000 pounds of iron ballast). Featuring a sleek fin keel (draft 3.67 feet standard, or shoal 2 feet) on a 7.75-foot beam, it achieves a hull speed of 5.6 knots and a PHRF handicap around 260, delivering sprightly upwind pointing thanks to the flexible mast's bendy profile and fully battened mainsail, while the signature Hoyt Gun Mount—a pivoting bow-mounted spinnaker tube—allows solo deployment and gybing of a symmetrical chute from the cockpit for downwind fun, though some owners note its modest windward ability in light airs. The cozy interior sleeps four via a V-berth forward and settee berths in the saloon, with a basic starboard galley (sink and icebox) and portable head, all under 5'10" headroom, making it ideal for day sails or weekend overnights rather than extended voyages; roughly 150 were produced, with UK variants sporting twin lifting keels.
