Flint Dory

Description

Designed by Ross Lillistone (Selway-Fisher Digital Plans and Designs) in 2010, inspired by traditional dories but optimized for modern amateur builders. Detailed in Lillistone's blog Duckworks Boat Builders Supply (2019 post: "Flint and Fleet - Different Hulls for Different Jobs") and available as full plans from Selway-Fisher. The Flint Dory is a versatile 15'6" (4.72m) rowing/sailing skiff with a displacement hull, drawing from classic dory heritage (e.g., Swampscott and Banks dories) but refined for efficiency in choppy, shallow waters like Moreton Bay, Australia. Named for its "flinty" resilience in short, steep waves, it's designed for solo or tandem use—excellent for rowing long distances, light sailing, or with a small outboard. Unlike traditional lapstrake dories, Flint uses stitch-and-glue plywood for quick, lightweight construction (build time: 100–150 hours). It's stable, seaworthy, and trailerable, with optional sailing rig (lug sail) or leeboards.
