Fast Passage 39
Description
The Fast Passage 39 is a classic bluewater cutter-rigged cruiser designed by William Garden (a renowned Canadian naval architect known for traditional, seaworthy designs with clipper bows and canoe sterns). It was built primarily by Philbrook's Boatyard (Sidney, British Columbia, Canada) starting in 1976, with production running through the early 1980s (about 36 hulls built there). Philbrooks later sold the molds to Tollycraft Corp. (a respected powerboat builder in Washington state), who produced a handful more—estimates vary from 4 to 9 additional boats, for a total of around 40–45 hulls overall. The design gained fame through Francis Stokes' circumnavigation in the inaugural 1982–83 BOC Challenge aboard his Fast Passage 39 "Moonshine" (he finished 3rd overall, highlighting its proven passage making ability). It's a heavy-displacement, full-keel (or cutaway/full with skeg rudder) cruiser emphasizing comfort, stability, and efficiency under sail—roomy interior (three cabins in some layouts, large tanks, good headroom), cutter rig for short-handed balance, and a canoe stern/clipper bow for classic aesthetics and sea-kindly motion.
