Farr Phase 4

Farr Phase 4

Description

The Farr Phase 4 (often called Farr Phase IV or simply Phase 4) is a 39–42 foot (depending on measurement) masthead sloop racer-cruiser designed by Bruce Farr (Farr Yacht Design #178, circa 1986). It's a post-IOR evolution from Farr's earlier designs (like the Farr 1104 or 38), shifting toward better all-round cruising performance with solid seaworthiness, comfort, and speed—without extreme rule-pushed distortions. Popular in Australia/New Zealand (where most were built), it's known as a "fast social cruiser" with great motion comfort, stability, and liveaboard potential (three cabins, two heads, inline galley). Built primarily by Binks Yacht Constructions (Australia) in the late 1980s (production short-lived, around 1988 onward), with some variations or home-finished hulls. Exact hull count is low (likely fewer than 20–30 total, as it's a semi-custom/niche model—not high-volume like Beneteau First series from Farr). It's fiberglass (core mat/foam in hull/deck for lightness/strength), with a fin keel (often bulb) and spade rudder for responsive handling.
